Nicolae Cristian is welcomed home!

Today I received my film back from my son's birth and his first week with us and my family while they were in town. It's exciting to relive those moments of the past, but also to see how much Nicu has grown in just two weeks. It's amazing what happens at this age. The photo above was taken when he was four days young.

Since there are many photos I'd like to share, what I thought I would do is post one, or a few, per day. I feel like that will keep things fresh and photos of Nicu moving along at a great pace.

I really look forward to opening my personal life up to you all, especially a part of my life that is very meaningful. And part of my life that is part of me. My better part.

Lisa's Final Maternity Shoot - Sneak Peek

As many of you already know, Lisa and I had our first child (a son) almost one weeks ago on May 28th. Several weeks before Nicolae's birth, Lisa and I did one final maternity shoot in Lawrence, KS. We're avid fans of the outdoors, so, naturally, it was all done outside. I'm still catching up with my life and work since Nicu's birth, so I will make a more lengthy post in a few days with more photos. For now, I just wanted to say hello to the world and share my wife's beauty just a few weeks before our son's arrival.

Much love to you all. xoxo

The Unwrapping...

A few weeks ago Lisa and I had our ultrasound to find out the sex of our baby. We decided to make an afternoon (a day, really) of it. So we had the ultrasound technician write it in a card that we had created the night before and include the photo. We then went to one of our favorite restaurants in KC, Blue Bird Bistro, to discover the secret. It was a beautiful day spent with two of my truest loves I've ever known.

Thank you to Richard Photo Lab.

anticipating...

the seasons are like lovers...they are individuals, but cannot help the occasional embrace to ensure the other that they are not far. but there are also times when all we are left with is distance and the wind...and we are hopeful of that gust that brings the scent of a loved on nearer. at that moment we cannot help but wonder what the other is doing. praying. soaking in silence. or perhaps watching the clouds and wondering if i, too, am wishing on that cloud...as we both used to do when we were children. i don't know the intricate working of the neural pathways that trigger my fond memories of summer and my parent's home, but my concern is not with the inner workings of beings, but rather with how we can once again become one with one another.

natural connection

one way i find to relax, clear my mind, and become grounded is to go out into nature. it inspires me and brings me back to what's important. it puts life in perspective. outside problems don't exist when i'm out there. it's me against me, chemically and anatomically. and with this great "winter" we've been having, it's easier than ever to do so. enjoy the remainder of your weekend!

Kansas City PWG Bridal Fair

Wow, what a weekend we had at the Engaged at Union Station bridal show! This was our first time participating in a bridal show and we had a blast meeting and talking to all the new brides and grooms! This was also our first time designing and setting up a bridal show booth. We loved the chance it gave us to find creative and artistic ways to display our photography.

For 2012, West Birch is excited to announce we now offer custom handmade framing services to our clients. We unveiled some of the framing options we offer at our booth at the bridal show. Our booth featured hand-carved frames from Kashal Art, our partnering company, that provides all of our framing services. All frames are custom made for our clients meaning no two frames will ever be identical. The possibilities for creating a one-of-a-kind pieces of art from your portraits are endless and make them that much more treasured as a work of art.

Here are some other custom frames provided by Kashal Art.

Our booth also featured the handmade albums we offer from Cypress Fine Albums. These albums really are the epitome of exquisite elegance. Brides loved both the traditional matted albums with their ribbon binding as well as the more contemporary flush mount albums with their library style binding.

We also displayed some of our prints in Cypress’ museum mat boards. We find there is something very beautiful about the simplicity of a photo displayed in these quality mat boards. They make for great unframed pieces.

Of course, a post of our bridal booth wouldn’t be complete without some pictures of the bridal booth details. As part of our fine art approach to photography, we truly believe that artistically captured details add a sense of wholeness to any story.

Antique Old World chairs added the perfect touch for our booth and brides definitely welcomed the chance to sit down for a moment and relax while they looked through our albums or described to us their plans for their wedding day.

Overall, the booth was a great success! Many, many thanks to the staff at Perfect Wedding Guide Kansas City, Cypress Albums, and Richard Photo Lab (especially Cohen at RPL who not only ensured I got perfect photos, but that they were sent on time). Also, none of this would be possible without all the support of both of our parents! Words cannot express how thankful we are for all the time and effort they devoted to helping us with the booth. Much thanks to my mom, who helped me scout out fabric stores to find just the right type of fabric to grace our booth walls and for gifting us with the antique family heirloom frame to display our company name and logo. Also big thanks to my in-laws who drove all the way from Chicago to deliver the frames and help us set up the booth. They worked tirelessly alongside us through several 12 hour days as they helped us build the booth walls, moved furniture, and set up and took down the booth. Their devotion to helping us with our first show will never be forgotten and we are forever indebted. Also, many thanks to our longtime family friends, Sharon and her mother, who were kind enough to loan us their antique chairs and planter. They added just the extra special touches that our booth needed. And last but not least, much thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth to visit with us! We’re definitely looking forward to all the weddings this year!

mission viejo + laguna beach, ca

lisa and i went to california about a month ago for a family event. i had spent some time in coronado/san diego area in the mid-nineties to early 2000's, but california is more beautiful than i remember it. i could spend every day waking up at the crack of dawn to enjoy the natural beauty the land has to offer. we hope to be spending more time there in the next year or so.
